Assignment One - Horror
Horror Correspondence Course - Assignment One
After I had a great time doing the Kubert School Inking course using Batman I decided to take the Horror course to another level. I used my own horror comic idea that I plan to produce as the subject of each assignment. It was useful and very entertaining to say the least. Upon completing the course and then coloring each page I now have a five page ash can of my comic that will be great at conventions to showcase the comic. For assignment one the task was fairly simple. Draw your monster. So I not only drew my monster I made a four panel sequence that tells a snippet of my story. This character will not appear in the first issue of my future comic but instead is talked about. The culmination of all five of the assignment pages tell just enough to hopefully gain the curiosity of an audience.
Here is the pencil version...
I really enjoyed inking this page. Panel three gave me a great opportunity to experiment around with some shadowing effects and the large panel four had wonderful detail for my number one baddie.
The final colored version was a big learning experience which I enjoyed.

Assignment Two - Horror
Horror Correspondence Course - Assignment Two
I haven't scanned the pencil version of this page yet but plan to do so. For assignment two the student is to utilize all the elements of lesson two. Namely, location, where and when, time of day, weather and mood. I tried to stick to the assignment criteria as close as I could and yet still provide a glimpse into part of my horror story premise.
And the final colored version. Here I learned a little about the effect I used to create the lightning. In future instances where I plan to use fog and burning buildings I'll have a better awareness as to how to render them first at the pencil and ink stage.
The practice drawings for this lesson were fun to do. I experimented around with rendering trees in a new way and while most of the objects were real I did invent the double cross necklace. The demonic possession sequence was my favorite to draw. The trucks and spooky house were inspired by actual places I saw while driving commercial trucks for a living. The mad monks for all seasons was a great exercise in shadow.

Assignment Three - Horror
Horror Correspondence Course - Assignment Three
For assignment three you have the option to use the provided script or one you wrote yourself. However, it could be no more than five panels. I wrote this sequence as another page for my ash can I was creating for my future superhero horror comic. It is eluding to how the heroes wife's soul is bound by the main villain of the story. Here is the pencil and lettered stage of assignment three.

The final colored version. In the last panel I was experimenting with adding some extra visual elements and effects.

Assignment Four - Horror
Horror Correspondence Course - Assignment Four
For my assignment four I wanted to introduce the main character of my superhero horror comic book idea. Here we see the hero arrive at the cemetery and change into his costume. This was probably my favorite assignment to draw. I really had fun with this one! I'm looking forward to being able to produce my first issue and get my comic in front of people. Hopefully this assignment and the others will excite curiosity in potential fans.
Here's a rough layout sketch I did before attempting the assignment.

Assignment Five - Horror
Horror Correspondence Course - Assignment Five
For the last assignment I wanted to keep with my running theme through the course of presenting my own horror comic graphic novel. In this scene we see Cloe bound to the inverted cross as the Father assesses the situation. As with the intent of all these I first wanted to satisfy the assignment requirements and then create pages for an ash can of my comic.
For this assignment you were instructed to draw four differing views of the head and then a splash scene of your horror character. I slightly modified it in that I drew the four heads in panels and added a large scene at the end. I also wrote my own narrative and dialog to go along. At the end of this post I've included the final coloring of the assignment as well. I really enjoyed this assignment. I especially enjoyed creating the strange corps in the air scene found. It was partly inspired by an old Doctor Strange comic. However, in that comic it wasn't corpses in the air it was a bizarre shape in one of Strange's other dimensional travels and it didn't look like a human just a magical shape...
Here's the colored version of the same page. Not only did I enjoy creating the crazy sky scene but I had fun coloring it too!
And finally here are some practice drawings I did for assignment five...
